Inexpensive Thanksgiving Traditions

Serve the Tea Please!

inexpensive Thanksgiving traditions

Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, togetherness, and traditions. Most people seem a little more cheerful. Hope twinkles in the eyes of those readying themselves for family gatherings and gift exchanges. While it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of holiday expenses, it’s equally important to create cherished memories without breaking the bank. In this post, we’ll explore some of the best inexpensive Thanksgiving traditions that you can start immediately.

For Your Immediate Family

Gratitude Jar

A gratitude jar is a heartwarming and budget-friendly tradition that can be started with minimal effort and cost. Place an empty jar on the kitchen table along with some small pieces of paper and pens. You can decorate your jar to match the festive feel of your gathering.

Throughout the day, encourage family members to jot down what they’re thankful for and place these notes in the jar.  During Thanksgiving dinner, take turns reading these notes aloud, and you’ll be reminded of the abundance of blessings you share.

Volunteering Together

Thanksgiving is a time for giving, and one of the most meaningful traditions you can start is volunteering as a family. It also serves as a reminder that we were created to serve each other. This is also a great way to instill the values of compassion, love, and selflessness into the smallest members of our families.  Character building lessons and warm memories that will last a lifetime.

Find local organizations or charities in need of help during the holiday season. Giving back not only strengthens the bonds within your family but also reminds every one of the true spirit of Thanksgiving. Here are some ideas on how you can help:

Find a soup kitchen near you.

Donate used clothing or household items.

Donate to a food bank.

Outdoor Games and Activities

Take advantage of the crisp autumn weather by organizing outdoor games like flag or touch football. It’s a cost-effective way to have fun and burn off some calories before the big meal.

Another fun idea and my personal favorite outdoor activity is a scavenger hunt. Surf the web for all sorts of budget friendly, fun and creative scavenger hunt ideas for all ages. You can make your scavenger hunt as widespread as you want depending on the age range of your family members. When your kids are younger, I suggest areas around your backyard or nearby park. When your kids become adults and as you continue the family tradition, you can expand the hunt area to include local restaurants and stores if that’s what you desire. Ending your scavenger hunt at the Thanksgiving table makes for a cozy ending to a fun filled day.

For Your Extended Family

Potluck Feast

Hosting a potluck-style Thanksgiving feast is a fantastic way to reduce the financial burden of preparing an entire meal yourself. Invite your guests to contribute their favorite dishes, whether it’s Aunt Mary’s famous pumpkin pie, Uncle Reginald’s special stuffing or Nana’s savory Caribbean rice. This not only spreads the cost but also brings a delightful variety to your dinner table.

Potluck-style meals of any kind are a great way to encourage togetherness among family, friends, and neighbors. As families grow and new friends are made, there could be persons from many cultural backgrounds attending your Thanksgiving feast.  I personally feel it adds a little more excitement as the anticipation mounts for the diverse and culturally rich dishes that make their way to the dinner table.

Thanksgiving Recipe Swap

While you’re in the process of inviting family, friends, and neighbors to the potluck-style Thanksgiving meal, encourage them to share their favorite Thanksgiving recipes. They can print them off on fun, decorative recipe cards. The cards can then be placed in a basket or large envelope and passed around for each guest to take one. Or you may consider swapping with the person seated next to you at dinner.

Each year, assign a different family member to choose a new recipe to prepare for the feast. This way, you can experiment with new dishes without purchasing costly ingredients or equipment. You would be surprised at the amount of recipe cards you can acquire over the years which comes in handy when you are looking to diversify your family’s weekly meals!

Starting these inexpensive family traditions will not only make your Thanksgiving memorable but will also strengthen the bonds within your family. Remember, it’s not about the money you spend but the quality time and love you share with your loved ones that truly matter. This Thanksgiving, make the most of your cherished moments without the stress of overspending.

What’s in your cup today? How about some Chai Tea and a lot of thankfulness!
